The Wheeler shot was detonated at 5:45 a.m. PDT today under a balloon some 500-feet above Yucca Flat as the seventeenth full-scale detonation of the Plumbbob series.
This is a shot added to the schedule since the start of Plumbbob by the University of California Radiation Laboratory at Livermore, incorporating data obtained from an earlier shot.
There were nine experiments on the sequence timer, with only limited participation by the military and civil effects programs. Fifteen Air Force aircraft flew support missions.
The detonation created the hour-glass effect usual with balloon shots. The cloud rose above 15,000 feet and is being blown slowly toward west of due north. There should be no appreciable fallout off-site.
The blast was not felt by observers at the Control Point but was heard as a mild thump.
